hey, ok yes i am just joining this community but i am about to advertise something =p but it isnt for my benefit honestly. Im working for ReflexStock.com which is a stock photography company in ireland and the kinda main interest is selling images that are partnered with getty images. Ive had a few brain storming meetings with my boss... telling him we should set it up to sell our own images, our own brand, people associated with us. And we got onto a conversation about how we dont just want stock photos, like there is a big market for graphics, icons and web interfaces and presentations. Its really difficult to get into this kind of thing especially for selling, soooo im trying to convince him artists are interested in submitting their work and what not, especially if a job opportunity could be involved. (i got into this to be a photographer and got landed with the arduous task of advertising, which makes me sad. i just wanted to take photos... soooo) I am trying to get more involved with the photography and art management. I should probably be targeting people who would be interested in purchasing images but im doin it for us struggling student types that cant get a break! I have a community 01reflexstock which is where i was hoping people would join and submit work. =)

12:18 pm - promo crap

I hear enough people complaining they have nothing to do.

Thursday night should be their exception.

Every Thursday night at Mapps Coffee and Tea (7:30 until 9:30) the Minnesota Spoken Word Association sponsors "The People's Open Mic".

performances include:
-spoken word poetry
- hip hop
-social commentary essays
- acoustic rock
- accapella
- comedy

It's different EVERY night. All depends on whom you bring and who's already there. So GET AWAY FROM YOUR COMPUTER AND GO ENJOY REAL LIFE.

And it's only about a block away from student housing. Corner of Cedar and Riverside, right across the street from Hard Times Cafe and Associated Bank. Kitty corner from the 400 Bar.

Let me tell you all my story. I am going to the VES festival this summer, courtesy of an extra student loan. In addition to the $1000 estimated cost of the festival, I took out $1000 to cover missed wages for that weekend, some miscellaneous household expenses, and anything else that might come up in July.

Well, I gave my financial advisor, Sara, the signed loan application last Tuesday. The 3rd of May. I had called for pre-approval already, and she told me that everything was set and the money should be here in a week.

Yesterday, Wednesday the 11th, I went to see her again.

"Sara, is the money through yet?"
Sara: Let me check.
... No, it's not.

Me: You told me it would be through yesterday.
Sara: Well, when did I meet with you?
Me: Last Tuesday.
Sara: Are you sure?
Me: YES.
Sara: Well, I could have sworn I sent the application right after I met with you.
(goes to my file)
It says here I sent the application on Friday.
Me: Friday???
Sara: Yeah. Are you sure you met with me on Tuesday?
Me: YES.
Sara: That's weird...

She called Sallie Mae, and they said they'd send the money the following day. So I went back today, Thursday the 12th.

Me: Sara, is the money through yet?
Sara: Let me check.
... No, it's not.

I was getting REALLY fed up. I gave up trying to be nice and easy on her; fuck it if she felt guilty about me not having my money. I hope she did.

Me: Why isn't it here?
Sara: I could try calling them again...
Me: Yeah, do that.

She called them again.

Sara: Now they're saying they're sending the funds tomorrow, and if they don't send them they're going to call me.
Me: I work all day tomorrow; I won't even be here. I won't even get it until Monday.
Sara: I'm really sorry.

GOD DAMMIT. If she had sent the FUCKING APPLICATION ON TUESDAY, I would have HAD MY MONEY. Right now, I owe a friend $300 for plane tickets and I can't pay her until this money gets here. I also can't pay my security deposit, lease application fee, OR first month's rent until this money gets here. I hate Student Financial Services.

Sorry, but I needed to bitch and moan to people who understood how incredibly evil our SFS is.

current mood: enraged

Just in case any of you haven't heard, thefacebook very recently added the Art Institutes to their supported schools. I highly recommend registering, so you have something to suck away all your free time during midterms!

And then to start you out, you can add me as a friend!

Hello :)
I just figured this would be a good place to ask if anyone knows of any up and coming female photographers? Not very far though, because I live in the Northern suburbs.

10:48 pm - lost and found

I left my umbrella in my class last week, and didn't realize it until TODAY.

Does anyone know if they have a Lost and Found at school? ...and where it is?

i'm confused.
i don't know what i want to do as far as college next year.
i love photography.
i take photos now for friends.. weddings, senior photos, for fun. i also took all the portraits for my school last year.
my main focus is portrait photography, for now at least.
my many concerns about going to minneapolis..
it's three hours away from home, i have a boyfriend of 3 years that i'm not quite ready to branch away from, and i'm a homebody. i need attention and lots of it. i don't know if i could get the kind of educational attention i need there.
i don't know what kind of degree i'm getting. ba? what?
i'd prefer to go to a university.
.. a lot of reasons.

but i'm at about a fifth grade math level.
i'm even thinking about getting tested for a learning disability, being almost eighteen, i suppose it'd be helpful if i could divide and mutiply. which i can't..
ALSO, i go to a charter school.
most universities aren't very open to the idea of a nontraditional educational background.
the woman i spoke to on the phone from the art school says they're very open to charter schooled kids.

my artist's portfolio speaks for itself.. my act score, not so much.

so, some questions.
how much is tuition per year for a photography degree?
how many years are you in college?
can you get two different degrees at the same time?
would i be taking mutiple classes a day on photography and that alone?
no reading, writing, arithmetic?
no classic art, like painting, sculpture?
is photography even offered?

11:58 pm - Class has begun...

...and I am having a great time. Besides on Monday, when I had Computer Applications, which I promptly switched out of. We learned how to double-click on our first day, and that was a sign for me to get out of there. I transferred into Conceptual Storytelling, and after being in that class today, I am completely pleased with the change. Rolf Belgum is the instructor, and he is very enthusiastic and extremely personable. I sat in on a class session of his over the summer as well. I highly recommend taking this class if you're an animation or visual effects student.

Also, I'm having a lot of fun in the Fundamentals of Design and Drawing & Perspective classes. I have Doug Garder and Jelena Tosovic for teachers of those classes, respectively, and thus far they both seem very good. Both seem to have a firm grasp on what they're talking about, and effective methods for teaching students of all experience levels. And art is fun anyway, so yippee!

I am not, however, looking forward to my Theories of Personal Communication class on Friday. I'll let you all know how it goes.

current mood: good

5:53 pm - first day supplies?

Does anyone have any idea what we are supposed to bring to our first day of class? I'm hoping we don't have to bring the full art supply kit... but if no one knows, that might be our best bet.
